Börkur Jónsson stundaði nám í eldsmíði og iðnhönnun í Artes Aplicadas de Granada á Spáni 1994-1996. Hann útskrifaðist úr skúlptúrdeild Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands árið 1999 og lauk MA-námi frá fjöltæknideild Listaháskólans í Helsinki árið 2002.
Börkur hefur gert fjölda leikmynda fyrir Vesturport, Þjóðleikhúsið, Borgarleikhúsið og fleiri aðila. Hann hefur einnig haldið fjölda einkasýninga og tekið þátt í fjölmörgum samsýningum á Íslandi og á meginlandinu.
Hér í Þjóðleikhúsinu gerði Börkur leikmynd fyrir Lé konung, Hænuungana, Óhapp, Túskildingsóperuna og Fagnað.
Meðal verkefna hans með Vesturporti eru Kommúnan, Woyzeck, söngleikurinn Ást, Rómeó og Júlía og Brim, auk Hamskiptanna sem frumflutt voru í Lyric Hammersmith í London. Rómeó og Júlía var einnig sýnt í Young Vic og Playhouse í London og Woyzeck í Barbican í London. Verkefni Barkar með Vesturporti hafa verið sett upp á fjölda hátíða víðs vegar um heiminn, meðal annars í London, Amsterdam, New York, Salamanca, Hong Kong, Gdansk, Moskvu og Ástralíu.
Meðal annarra verkefna Barkar í leikhúsi eru Enron, Fjölskyldan, Rústað, Héri Hérason og Terrorismi í Borgarleikhúsinu, Dubbeldusch hjá LA, Shakespeare eins og hann leggur sig í Iðnó, Meistarinn og Margaríta í Hafnarfjarðarleikhúsinu og Blóðbrúðkaup með Nemendaleikhúsi LHÍ.
Börkur hefur einnig starfað við gerð fjölda kvikmynda og auglýsinga. Hann gerði leikmynd kvikmyndarinnar Brim.
Börkur var tilnefndur til “Best short film” í Milano Film Festival 2003 fyrir Postcard to Kristján. Hann var tilnefndur til “Designer of the Year” í Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2006 fyrir Hamskiptin.
Börkur hlaut Grímuverðlaunin fyrir Fjölskylduna, Hamskiptin, Fagnað og Woyzeck, og var tilnefndur til Grímunnar fyrir Hænuungana, Rústað, Kommúnuna, Brim og Héra Hérason.
